What Should be Included on Certificates of Auhenticity for Art?

Certificate of Authenticity Ready to be Signed

So you’ve created a body of work that you’re ready to release into the world. That is amazing! As you turn to the specifics of how you will market, package and sell your pieces, you may be considering including a Certificate of Authenticity with your sold artworks. There are many reasons why you may want to create Certificates for your work and multiple ways to obtain them.

Yet, every Certificate should include certain specific distinguishing characteristics about your artwork. These are:

1. Title of work

All artworks should have a unique name (e.g., Abstract Dreams) or identifiable qualification if part of a series (e.g., Abstract Composition No. 167).

2. Dimensions

How large is the artwork? List the length x height x width (e.g., 16x20x2”). Flat works, such as those on paper or canvas board, can be listed with just the length and height (e.g., 10x12”).

3. Medium (including substrate)

What did you use to create your work of art? Include it here (e.g., oil on canvas).

4. Edition number (if applicable for prints)

Certificates for Limited Edition prints should include the edition number as well (e.g., 12/50).

5. Date / Year created

This can be an exact date, Month and Year (e.g., January 2022) or the Year completed.

6. Artist name & signature

Your name should be prominent on the Certificate and your signature should be hand written.

7. Statement of Authenticity and Copyright

This is a tailored statement that verifies the authenticity and copyright ownership of the artwork, if relevant. For example, for original art, we typically include something along the lines of: This artwork is a one of a kind original. All copyright and reproduction rights are reserved by the artist.

Optional Inclusions

In addition to the above, you can also include:

  • Image of artwork

  • Special instructions or notes, if any

  • Any other details important in identifying your work
